Periodontal disease is a group of illnesses located in the gums and other dental supporting structures (periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone) caused by accumulation of microorganisms that form what is called dental plaque, a chronic inflammation of the gingiva and connective tissue leading to destruction of the tooth supporting tissues, including alveolar bone, and may eventually result in tooth loss.
